Alpha Dog Games has released its newest mobile game MonstroCity: Build and Destroy in the Philippines, as a prelude to a global launch.

The Bedford-based mobile game company and its German online game publisher Gameforge hope to position MonstroCity in the top 10 games in the Apple and Google app stores worldwide.

Founded by Jeff Cameron and Shawn Woods in 2012, Alpha Dog has developed console and PC games, including Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, Madden NFL, and Company of Heroes.

Now it is working with Gameforge, one of largest European companies in the free-to-play PC market, with more than 450 million players registered in 75 countries.

Alpha Dog and Gameforge decided to first launch MonstroCity in the Philippines first because the Pacific nation has a large gaming market, and the partners can work out the kinks with the game there before they release it worldwide.

“When you do go live, you know that you are going to have a certain level of success there,” Cameron said. “We believe that we have a potential hit with this game, so we’re going to keep on it as long as it takes.”

Some players in the Philippines have stopped playing other games and solely play MonstroCity, he said.

MonstroCity allows players to defend their city from monsters, like Godzilla and King Kong. They can use their skills in the game to attack monsters and other players. Rewards in the game includes DNA, which allows players to create new monsters to attack other cities or to create a new city.

“There’s this mad scientist twist to it,” Woods said. “It’s this fun game filled with creativity and engagement.”

The mobile games market has skyrocketed in the past few years. Mobile games Clash of Clans and Game of War together grossed $2 billion in revenue last year—more money than the top 10 console games put together.

Clash of Clans alone grossed as much revenue as the recent Star Wars movie: $1.3 billion.

Alpha Dog will operate MonstroCity under the same business model as Clash of Clans and Game of War: freemium. Users can download MonstroCity for free, but if they want certain perks, like more gold, they have to pay for it.

Finland is the capital of mobile games because many of the people working in the industry created their mobile game companies after Nokia shut down (think Angry Birds). With recent investments in the mobile games industry in Charlottetown and the opening of a Hot Head Games studio in Halifax, the Maritimes could become another hub of mobile game companies.

“We look at Atlantic Canada in the same way to Canada as Finland to the world,” Cameron said. “It’s going to be a really fun 2016 being a company from Nova Scotia that’s competing on a worldwide scale.”
