The University of New Brunswick is offering entrepreneurs a total of $30,000 worth of funding via this year’s Apex Startup Challenge.

The event, organized by UNB’s International Business & Entrepreneurship Centre, will see students and early-stage entrepreneurs from across Canada develop business plans for new ventures, which they will then present to a judging panel and mentors.

The competition itself will be held Jan. 25 and 26, with participants receiving pitch training ahead of time. It will include two tiers, one for students developing new business plans and one for entrepreneurs with “early-stage, massively scaleable ventures."

The students will be required to prepare a 25-page business plan, while the entrepreneurs will need to be posting less than $1 million in annual revenue, have fewer than 25 employees and come bearing a 12-slide pitch deck.

Competitors in the student track can originate from any post-secondary institution in the world and will compete for $20,000 of cash and other prizes, with a travel subsidy of up to $500 per team also available. The new venture founders, meanwhile, will compete for $10,000 worth of non-dilutive funding.

“The Apex experience extends beyond the competitive events, where competitors will be engaged in training workshops, networking opportunities with judges, potential investors and future employers,” said UNB in a statement.
