Halifax startup hub Volta held its annual Democamp Wednesday, playing host to a roster of mostly software-focused startups.
The event was held virtually and gave nine entrepreneurs the chance to expound on how their innovations work and their value propositions. And they did so without the help of slide decks because Volta’s Democamps aim to focus on the technology being showcased, not the finances or business development strategies of the companies presenting.
Each company had five minutes to discuss their product, and audience members were encouraged to ask questions and give feedback.
Seven of the nine companies were from Halifax, one was from Fredericton and one was from St. John’s.

St. John’s
NotificationAPI is building backend software to help app developers add smartphone notifications to their products — usually a labour-intensive process — in a matter of minutes.

Easy Platter is an online platform that allows customers to hire personal chefs on a subscription basis for $7.75 per meal.

Zen is building a high-performance electric bike with longer than normal battery life. The company said its bikes have about 75 kilometres of range, which can be powered by roughly 10 cents worth of electricity.

Sandbox is a suite of software tools that can be used to build ERP, or enterprise resource planning, environments. The software’s purpose is to help small businesses replace spreadsheets with cloud-based databases and consolidate their data.

Picketa is an online platform for farmers that aims to use its data analytics features to help users make decisions about when and how much fertilizer to use.
Halifax
Bloxo is an app that lets users register for and participate in online fitness activities, such as yoga and Pilates. The current model is a slight restructuring of the previous version, which focused on in-person classes and public recreation venues.
