In a sign of how active the startup community in Atlantic Canada has become, November will feature not one, not two, but three Startup Weekends. And these are just a few of the events taking place in the coming month.

Jason Janes, a co-founder of Startup St. John’s, and Chris Gardner, the founder of the Common Ground co-working space, are organizing a Startup Weekend Nov. 8-10 at the Genesis Centre at Memorial University in St. John’s. It will allow 60 people to spend a weekend putting together companies, the best of which will hopefully become bona fide enterprises. I’m proud to say I will be attending the event as a judge.

It will be followed by concurrent events in Halifax and Moncton from Nov. 15 to 17. The Halifax event will take place at the Killam Library at Dalhousie University, while the Startup Weekend New Brunswick will be held at Pavillon Jacqueline-Bouchard on Antonine-Maillet Avenue in Moncton.

The highlight of the month promises to be the Launch36 DemoDay in Saint John on the evening on Nov. 19. The regional accelerator has shortened its cohort training period to about 12 weeks. Executive Director Trevor MacAusland has said the current cohort advanced more quickly in the early stages than previous cohorts because the members have been exposed to other support groups in the ecosystem.

The previous two DemoDays have been tremendous events. I’ve interviewed three of the companies in the current cohort and am looking forward to the third DemoDay. It will be held in conjunction with the 10th anniversary celebration for PropelICT.

The busy month begins with the Pond-Deshpande Centre at the University of New Brunswick organizing a bus tour of the innovation hub in Boston.

The bus leaves Fredericton at 7 am on Wednesday, and the tour will include visits to the Mass Challenge Awards and offices; the Merrimack Valley Sandbox and their educational partners UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College; and the Greentown Labs and Artisans Asylum.
