Halifax’s LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. has bought the intellectual property and other assets of distressed Streetlight Intelligence Inc. of Victoria, B.C., to combine smart wireless technology with its energy-efficient HPS and LED street lighting.
To meet the latent demand for more sophisticated outdoor lighting, the company founded by CEO Chuck Cartmill has been researching new technologies such as dimming features that use less light during low traffic periods. The acquisition will propel the company further in that direction by adding wireless controls to the lighting technology.
“LRL now brings to market a single-source solution for customers, integrating control options with street lighting fixtures to further improve energy-efficiency and reduce total life-cycle costs,” said Cartmill in a statement.
“Adaptive lighting controls and monitoring capabilities are increasingly in demand as municipalities and other customers seek ways to control costs related to energy consumption and maintenance of fixtures.”
Streetlight Intelligence is a publicly listed company that once offered so much promise that it attracted such backers as Ontario Hydro. However, it fell on hard times and the assets were sold off in a court-monitored procedure. The receiver said the four-month sale targeted more than 100 potential buyers and generated 23 serious prospects.
LED Roadway Lighting, which has its research and design centre in Halifax and a 55,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Amherst, secured $11.6 million in funding in June from Nova Scotia Business Inc., Cycle Capital of Montreal and Cartmill.
