Ladies Learning Code, the national group that introduces people of all ages and genders to programing, is coming to New Brunswick.
The group began in Toronto a few years ago and came to Atlantic Canada earlier this year with a few sessions in Halifax. Though it does encourage females to learn about technology, the organization is somewhat misnamed because its students are simply people who are new to coding, regardless of their sex. It’s also proven a great way for children and teenagers to learn about coding.
The first New Brunswick Fredericton event will be held Sept. 21 – which is National Learn to Code Day -- at the new ACcelR8 centre in Knowledge Park in Fredericton. The New Brunswick Chapter will be hosting events on an ongoing basis rotating them monthly between Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John.
“It does not require any prior programming knowledge and is for anyone who has ever wanted to learn what coding is all about,” said Nicole LeBlanc, the CFO of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and one of the organizers.
Students at the Fredericton session – to be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- will learn introductory HTML and CSS from instructor Christina Truong and work with volunteer developer mentors, who will lead students through the course material and practice activities.
By the end of the day each student will have developed their own personal website and have a strong understanding of foundational web skills. HTML and CSS are the backbone of all websites, and knowledge of them is essential to pursuit of web development, creating marketing emails, and even blogging.
