Twelve companies have graduated from the first cohort of Creative Destruction Lab Oceans, meaning a total of 17 oceantech startups have now graduated from the accelerator.
While the Atlantic Canadian CDL group previously accepted oceantech companies into its general program, the 2020-21 session was the first with a stream dedicated to oceantech companies. It attracted 20 companies from nine countries, and 12 of these graduated from the course.
The companies in the Oceans cohort have raised a total of $15 million and some rounds are still open so the total may increase, said Alex Hurley, the Senior Venture Manager of the Oceans Stream.
“The value of the CDL Oceans Stream can be witnessed in how the global mentor network helps advise and support the ocean ventures,” said Hurley in an email. “In addition to access to world-class mentorship and fundraising opportunities, the CDL mentor network helped inspire and facilitate a number of partnerships and pilot projects.”
He said the partnerships include relationships with such organizations as Clearwater Seafoods, Kraken Robotics, and the Port of San Diego.
CDL is now accepting applications to its 2021-22 programs – including Oceans and other streams. You can apply here by July 30.

ECOncrete Tech, Tel Aviv
ECOncrete develops high performance, environmentally sensitive concrete products that enhance the biological and ecological value of coastal and marine infrastructure.
Flux Marine, East Greenwich, Rhode Island
Flux Marine manufactures electric outboard motors. Existing gas motors have low reliability, high maintenance costs, and contribute to air and water pollution, the company said.
Hydromea, Switzerland
