BioVectra, a Charlottetown-based pharmaceutical manufacturer, this week won BIOTECanada's Gold Leaf Award for Company of the Year.
BIOTECanada is a national association devoted to the growth of Canada’s biotech sector. It presents awards each year to companies and individuals that have had significant achievements within the industry.
In a statement announcing the award, BioVectrea said it continues to make headway as it has opened a new biologics facility in Windsor, N.S., and begun an expansion at its headquarters in Charlottetown.
"We continue to build upon our capabilities, our development experience, and our technologies so that we can grow alongside our partners and help them advance their clinical programs efficiently," said BioVectra President Oliver Technow in the statement.
“None of this would be possible without our highly dedicated and specialized employees. This award is truly a testament to their hard work and tenacity."
In April, the federal government announced that it would lend BioVectra $5 million to help it expand operations and upgrade a plant in Nova Scotia.
The facility, which is predicted to create over 30 jobs, will be fully operational by 2020.
BioVectra was founded in 1970 by J. Regis Duffy, then Dean of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island. The company was purchased in 2013 by Questcor Pharmaceuticals of Anaheim, Calif., for $100 million, and since then has been expanding.
