Bedford-based software company NewPace announced yesterday that it has secured two loans worth a total of $850,000 from Business Development Bank of Canada to develop and market its suite of services, which will soon include a new mobile telecom product.
The company, founded in 2009, said in a statement the funding supports the development and marketing of a new mobile software solution that NewPace will sell to global telecommunications operators. The software solution is based on the Rich Communications Suite (RCS-e) specifications, a newly adopted mobile global standard established by the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) Association.
In an interview, CEO Brent Newsome said some of the money will be used for software development at the Bedford headquarters, but most of it will be spent on international sales and marketing. He said the company’s market lies far beyond Nova Scotia and it needs to let the global telecom companies know of its software solutions.
“We need to get on planes,” he said.
NewPace engages in three lines of business: software engineering for telecom companies; mobile applications; and the new solution, which it has tentatively called RCS-e.
“The best way to describe RCS-e is an enhanced version of SMS messaging with the features of familiar PC-based Instant messaging services,” said Chief Technology Officer Gavin Murphy in a statement. “The new standard provides integrated chat, video and photo sharing and allows users to seamlessly connect with their friends who are (and aren’t) on the same mobile carrier.”
He added that RCS-e, which features a cost-effective option for smaller carriers, will first be rolled out in 2012 by five of Europe’s top telecom carriers.
NewPace also expects to continue adding to its 40-person technology team with the funding.
The company is owned by its founders and employees and has never sold equity to angel or VC investors, though Newsome did say they may be looking for investment in the future.
