FounderFuel, a Montreal-based accelerator for startups, will bring its roadshow to Halifax – an event that represents more than simply a chance for Atlantic Canadian entrepreneurs to meet with the accelerator organizers.
The announcement also proves the ability of the region’s tech community to work together to organize an event quickly and to convince people outside the region of the excellence in entrepreneurship on the East Coast.
“What it does indicate is there is a definite gelling of the tech community here,” said Paul LeBlanc, CEO of Karma Gaming.
The highly respected accelerator announced today it will hold a meeting from 5 to 7 pm at the Karma office in Halifax on Jan. 22. Details of the session will unfold in the next few weeks.
When FounderFuel first announced its roadshow last month, it included stops in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, Ottawa and Waterloo but nothing east of Quebec. That announcement took place as several Maritime startup CEOs have been meeting to build up structure for the entrepreneurial community in the region, and collectively they decided to try to convince FounderFuel to add a stop out east. Certainly, the thinking went, the quality of startups in Atlantic Canada merits some consideration by the accelerator.
On Dec. 19, Quark Engineering CEO Tim Burke tweeted: “Hey #EastCoast #Startups - RT if you'd like to see the @founderfuel Roadshow come to our region?”
That message was retweeted by several people, including Jeff Thompson of UserEvents in Fredericton, Nathalie Arsenault of Seeets in Charlottetown, and the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development in Halifax.
FounderFuel itself tweeted that it liked the idea, and asked for a suggestion of a location. That led to a quiet organization effort in Halifax, and GoInstant CEO Jevon MacDonald called LeBlanc to see if Karma could host the event.
Earlier today, FounderFuel tweeted that it had added the Halifax stop.
