In the latest edition of Progress magazine, I take a look at the challenges facing startups when trying to attract talented people.
One thing that surprised me as I researched the story was that it is easier in some respects to staff a brand new company than one that’s been around for a few years. People like the idea of joining startups, but they prefer to be in on the ground floor and receive a founder’s slice of the pie.
Yet startups continue to attract great people. In the past month, Innovacorp has lost two investment managers to young companies – Thomas Rankin to his own company Pathmata and Rachel Aaron to CarbonCure Technologies. At Launch36 in Moncton, second-in-command Astree Goguen has joined Charlottetown-based Get Gifted.
This article also represents one more staffing change that affects us personally. This issue of Progress was the last to be edited by Pamela Scott-Crace, who is retiring after being with the magazine for two decades. It was always a joy to work with Pam, who combined a marvelous knowledge of the market with an attention to detail and a flair for design. Fortunately, Pam will still hold an editor emeritus role at Progress and we’ll still get to work with her sporadically. We wish Pam well in her gradual move into retirement.
