Nautel Ltd., the Hackett’s Cove, N.S., maker of radio and television transmitters, agreed Wednesday to buy the business and assets of Marport C-tech Ltd., a Cornwall, Ont.-based maker of engineered sonar solutions.

The buyer said in a statement that the terms of the deal, which is subject to court approval, would not be released.

Opened in 1969 as a maker of radio transmitters, Nautel has been on a roll lately. The company has branched into television transmitters, and won its first orders in September. It also won a transformative contract for digital AM radio transmitters with All India Radio, and it shipped its first transmitter on the contract the same month.

In an interview in September, CEO Peter Conlon said the company’s annual revenue has soared from about $15 million in 2006 to about $40 million today, and its estimated market share has more than quintupled.

By purchasing C-Tech, Nautel is adding a producer of sonar equipment whose clients include the navies of at least 10 countries, including Canada and the U.S.

“The addition of C-Tech opens many new growth opportunities for Nautel and offers many market, engineering and manufacturing strengths,” Kevin Rodgers, chairman of parent company Nautel Capital Corp., said in a statement. “The C-Tech acquisition is a significant step in achieving Nautel’s diversification and growth plan.”

Nautel said C-Tech will continue to operate in Cornwall under the leadership of General Manager Dennis Derouin. The business is expected to have an initial workforce of about 30 full time and contract employees.
