In our Job of the Week column today, we’re showcasing an opening posted by Dalhousie University for a Communications Manager for its Founders Skills Initiative, part of the I-INC program.
The Founders Skills Initiative is developing evidence-based programming designed to create better mentors and ultimately better entrepreneurs. It’s part of the Incubate Innovate Network of Canada, or I-INC, a pan-Canadian network of university-linked accelerators and incubators.

Reporting to, and working with the Director, Founders Skills Initiative and the Director, I-INC, the Manager, Communication will support both the Founders Skills Initiative (50%) and I-INC (50%) initiatives and will be responsible for the successful development of the communications strategy for both initiatives as well as the execution and delivery of its rollout. The Manager, Communication ensures the highest caliber of communications planning, delivery and execution to ensure awareness and positive branding of both initiatives.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Develop strategic communication plans for both initiatives based on a needs assessment and insight into the key deliverables of each initiative; deploy the plans across multiple channels.
Recommend the best forms of communication based on the target audiences and work closely with the Directors to execute and bring messaging to market.
Proactively engage advisors/stakeholders, partners and media to ensure effective promotion and a continual awareness of programs and initiatives. This may involve press releases, media advisories, emails, documentation, presentations or one-on-one meetings.
Promote both initiatives by working with Communications & Marketing contractors to design and produce physical and digital promotional materials, and presentations.
Manage the day-to-day of the overall communications strategy, and the delivery of communication deliverables.
Assist in creating content and maintain the Future Skills Initiative and I-INC websites, including working with designers to coordinate design elements, new images, new photography, writing content that highlights the value of the programs to stakeholders, and showcasing narratives from employers and alumni who place value on the initiative.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in Communications, Media Relations or Digital Marketing, with a minimum of 3 years related experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience) within a university, not for profit, or commercial environment is required. Demonstrated experience with social media, media relations and digital marking is required. Experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, with time devoted to managing communications strategies, executing and developing content and/or servicing tech-based entrepreneurs is an asset. Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with all levels of stakeholders. Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, are required. Familiarity with the Innovation and Entrepreneurship ecosystem locally, nationally, and internationally is an asset.
