Aurea Technologies, the Halifax maker of portable wind turbines, is one of 10 companies to be accepted into social impact investor Coralus’s Canadian list of 10 Selected Ventures to watch.
Coralus, an international industry group founded in Toronto in 2015, invests in women-led companies with the help of funds crowdsourced from its members. Aurea is the only Atlantic Canadian business to make this year’s list.
The company, co-founded by Cat Adalay and Rachel Carr, sells a portable power generator designed for wildnerness adventurers who need to charge their devices during excursions, dubbed the Shine Turbine. The device costs $549, is made in Canada and is small and light enough to be carried in a backpack
“A BIG thank you to the hundreds of (Coralus) community members who voted for us and have contributed their time, support, resources, and connections,” said Aurea in a social media statement.
Aurea launched the Shine turbine on Kickstarter in 2021, and in September of last year it became one of a trio of companies to receive the inaugural investments from the Women’s Equity Lab Atlantic angel fund — a recently created, female-focused angel investing group from the non-profit Atlantic Women’s Venture Foundation. And earlier in 2023, Adalay and Carr secured a six-figure research and development grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada.
Full disclosure: Cat Adalay, the CEO of Aurea Technologies, is the daughter of the owners of Entrevestor.
