Transport Canada is looking to spend $22.5 million to fund research and development work on low-emission marine propulsion systems over the next five years.

The Clean Vessel Demonstration Stream of the federal agency’s Green Shipping Corridor Program, announced Friday, will offer grants for research, engineering and feasibility studies; safety assessments for pilot projects; and the development of safety codes related to the operation of new, clean propulsion systems.

Examples of technologies eligible for funding under the program include biofuels, battery systems and wind and solar power systems, among other possibilities.

“The Clean Vessel Demonstration Stream will provide $22.5M in grant and contribution funding over five years from 2023-24 to 2027-28 for projects with the goal of increasing the technology readiness of leading-edge low- and zero-emission vessel technologies; addressing potential barriers to the deployment of clean vessel innovations in Canada; and building Canadian industry's capacity to adopt decarbonization solutions for their vessels," says Transport Canada.
