Halifax biopharma company Appili Therapeutics has raised about $16.9 million to fund Canadian trials of influenza drug Favipiravir, which is owned by Japanese photography and biotech giant FUJIFILM Toyama Chemical Company.

The private placement comes in the wake of Appili’s $10.25 million raise in February of this year and is part of a surge in bioscience fundraising in Atlantic Canada.

Wayne Sumarah has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Digital Nova Scotia, the association for the $2.5 billion information technology industry in the province.

The association issued a statement on Thursday announcing that its board of directors had selected Sumarah for the top executive position. He replaces Ulrike Bahr-Gedalia, who held the position from 2013 until early this year.

GrowthWorks Atlantic Venture Fund Ltd., one of the first venture capital funds in Atlantic Canada, has decided to wind up operations.

The fund has not raised new capital since 2014, and has been reducing its holdings in recent years as its portfolio companies exited, collapsed or found buyers for GrowthWorks’ shares.

Now its board has decided the time has come to wind up the fund entirely.
