St. John’s-based SkillsHawk – the new name for Creatros Technologies – is reporting strong sales of its talent-mining technology more than three months after its official launch.
The company came together more than four years ago at Memorial University and set out to solve a problem that plagues many teams of programmers – understanding the skillsets of all the team members. It’s common that a development team of 25 or more individuals has a range of capabilities, and it can take time to find the right person for the right task.
The SkillsHawk solution overlays commonly used project management tools like Jira, or operates as a stand-alone product. The software records what tasks each team member has completed. When team leaders have a task to perform, they can instantly see who has already done something similar so they can quickly find the best person available.
“SkillsHawk offers a great solution to instantly find the right person based on the required skills within an organization,” said Arifusalam Shaikh, Creatros CEO. “We feel this information being at decision-makers’ fingertips will greatly enhance their abilities to optimize their operations.”
In late November, the product was launched in the Atlassian marketplace. Atlassian is an Australian software company that develops products for software developers and project managers.
The software is now being used in tandem with Jira by nine clients, and the stand-alone product is being used by three others, said Shaikh in an interview. He added that the company has a geographically diversified client base with users in such countries as the U.K. and Germany.
The feedback from clients has been positive and is helping the development team refine the product, said Shaikh.
Initially, the company targeted tech companies with more than 200 employees as their sweet spot, and now they are working on their analytics to refine their targeting. After focusing on product managers in software companies, they’re now looking at human resources heads.
The development team led by CTO Monjur Ul-Hasan is continuing to improve the product, aiming to release updates about once every two weeks.
The company was co-founded by Shaikh, Ul-Hasan and Chief Operating Officer Ashley Sullivan, and they have grown the team so it now comprises seven members.
So far, the co-founders have bootstrapped, funding it with their own sources and money from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, IRAP and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the next few months, they hope to have solid traction that will help them to raise an equity round of about $500,000 to $600,000.
“By the end of the year, we would like to have a reasonable number of clients from Canada and America,” said Shaikh. “And SkillsHawk should be known as a one-stop product for anyone who’s looking for skills tracking.”
