Halifax-based LED Roadway Lighting Ltd., which manufactures smart and low-energy street lighting, has been named a cleantech Export Star by Export Development Canada, or EDC.

Each year, EDC highlights the achievements of leading cleantech companies during its Cleantech Export Week conference. LED Roadway Lighting was recognized as a leader in the field that has succeeded in selling its products outside Canada.

“Each year, it brings me great pride and gratitude to announce Canada’s Export Stars and Ones to Watch, but this year is particularly impactful,” Dan Mancuso, Senior Vice-President of Financing and Investments at EDC, said in a statement. “Not only have these Canadian companies proven to be leaders in the fight against climate change, but they’ve also exemplified resiliency and perseverance amid the current economic crisis,”

LED Roadway was founded in 2007 by CEO and President Chuck Cartmill to manufacture LED-based lighting fixtures for street lights. As well as its headquarters in Halifax, the company operates at its primary manufacturing facility in Amherst, N.S. In recent years, it has launched its Liveable Cities division, which uses sensors and other technology to help local governments reduce their energy consumption.

LED Roadway’s smart street lighting products are now used worldwide in more than 60 countries.

The central piece of hardware in its Liveable Cities offering is its patented Tool-less Sensor Platform, which allows clients to quickly replace existing photocells on any streetlight with a wireless sensor that plugs into the streetlight’s existing power supply.

These sensors can monitor such factors as air quality, noise levels and traffic flow, and support dimming of the lights to conserve energy when they’re not needed. The system also provides the client with reports on the information from the sensors.

“We’ve seen a lot of interest from our clients about how we can help them achieve smart city objectives such as greenhouse gas reduction and improved air quality,” said Cartmill in the statement. “EDC’s Account Performance Security Guarantee has allowed us to expand our capability with our bank to issue both bid guarantees and performance guarantees. With this program, we’re able to issue standby letters of credit as guarantees required under contracts, or as part of bids, without impacting our operating line of credit.”
