When the co-founders of znanja Inc. appear at DemoCamp Halifax on Sept. 23, they’ll have something they didn’t have when they entered Innovacorp’s I-3 Competition last year – a product.

Picomole Wins Patent Approval

Picomole Instruments, a Moncton company developing a breath analysis device that detects cancer, yesterday announced that it has received approval from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and will patent the device.

Formerly called “LifeSens”, the device is currently unnamed because the company couldn't trademark that name.

Karma Signs Australian Lottery Deal

Karma Gaming, the Halifax startup out to marry regulated lotteries with video games, has signed a major contract to provide online games to Jumbo Interactive, a regulated lottery company in Australia.

Brisbane-based Jumbo said yesterday it had signed a deal with Karma Gaming, under which it would launch a Karma-designed interactive game that users could play as a means of picking lottery numbers. Springleap to Attend MentorCamp

Springleap, a South African design crowdsourcing startup, will attend MentorCamp Halifax on Sept. 24, guaranteeing that at least one international company will attend the one-day event.

Permjot Valia, the CEO of MentorCamp, wants to include overseas startups among the mix of Atlantic Canadian companies to increase the international flavor of the event and enhance the exchange of ideas and experience. The Evolution of Invest Atlantic

For me, very little says more about the accelerated evolution of Atlantic Canada’s innovation economy than the maturation of Invest Atlantic.

The only pan-regional conference for investors and entrepreneurs in Atlantic Canada will be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax on Sept. 26, the third of four events in Atlantic Innovation Week. BioPort Contest Growing in 2012

The 2012 BioInnovation Challenge at BioPort Atlantic will be a larger event than last year, featuring seven participants, of whom at least three, have raised money previously.

The BioInnovation Challenge was launched in 2011 as the competitive event at BioPort, the main conference for biosciences in Nova Scotia. There were five participants last year, and ABK Biomedical, which is developing a product for the treatment of benign tumors in women, emerged with the $30,000 first prize.

Here’s Why TruLeaf is So Exciting

Three years ago, businessman Gregg Curwin asked to meet me to discuss my book on the Nova Scotia economy, in part because he took exception to my statement that food production was too small a part of the province’s economy to have a significant impact on its future.

In fact, he told me, he was working on a system to grow local vegetables indoors under LED lights, using renewable energy and minimal water and fertilizer. McKenzie Accelerator: Apply Now!

The value of the McKenzie Accelerator – which is now accepting applications to its second cohort – was driven home to me when I watched Guyverson Vernous present his company iCubemedia at the accelerator’s Demo Day in April.
